What’s so great about confidence anyway?

Confidence is the unshakeable belief that you can rely on yourself, no matter what happens. Without it, you might pass up on that big opportunity, talk yourself out of going on that date, or downplay your unique skills, talents and abilities. 
Confidence is that little voice inside your head that says ‘You got this’. It’s the very thing that gives you the courage to go after your dreams and achieve your full potential.

It’s something you can cultivate with your thoughts. Building confidence starts with being aware of what goes on in your head, and moulding it into something that supercharges your self-belief. It’s always in your power to develop it, no matter who you are or where you are in life. 
That’s really good news because it means everyone – yep, you included - can have confidence. Everyone can build belief in their abilities and conquer the confidence issues that often hold them back.

How To Build Your Confidence

Befriend your inner mean girl or boy
We all have an inner critic. That voice in our heads that stops us from going after our dreams, critiques our work, and tells us we aren’t good enough, clever enough, or capable enough to do this, that and the other. 
Self-help guru Melissa Ambrosini calls it your inner ‘mean girl’. The secondary school bully who tries to keep your achievements small, but here’s the thing, you don’t need to fight them. 
Becoming aware of this voice and not believing all that is says about you is the first step in over-coming a lack of confidence. Picture this; you are nervous about starting a new job or going to an event. Within the first few moments your inner mean girl or boy starts; “Ugh, here you go again, you are so awkward, why did you say that…they are never going to like you”.
How does this make you feel? Will you behave like yourself? Will you be comfortable in your own skin? Will you enjoy yourself? We think not. Imagine a new scenario; you are aware you can be hard on yourself so before you go to work or the event you say positive affirmations to yourself to bring in new empowering beliefs such as “I am comfortable, I am becoming more confident, I am looking forward to meeting new people, I am at ease in new environments, I can handle any situation, I am strong”. You have changed the narrative in your mind and adapted an effective technique also known as ‘fake it till you make it!’ Try this the next time your inner critic gets loud and tries to take over the show.
Ever heard the phrase ‘kill ‘em with kindness’? This is how you get your inner critic on your side. Learn to identify with them when they pop up with an unhelpful comments or nasty putdown, give them a name and ask questions like; “What’s wrong, why are you feeling like this, and what do you need right now?” And once you’ve befriended them, they no longer have the same power to hold you back. If you are believing your thoughts and not questioning them you can fall into a trap of self - inflicted turmoil.
  1. Become aware and listen to the thoughts you are having
  2. Rewrite the story with positive affirmations
  3. Name the voice
  4. Become friends with the voice - what do you need from me? What facts do you have to support this? Why are you not on my side?

    Talk to yourself like a best friend 

    What would you say to a friend who was having a crisis of confidence? You’d probably tell her she’s doing the best she can? You’d remind her about that time she got that promotion in work, or how she always has a great way of making people feel at ease. You’d tell her what great company she is, and remind her she’s uniquely special, capable, and talented. 
    But let us ask you this, how often do you do the same for yourself? Instead of knocking your confidence with nasty put downs, start telling yourself all the things you would say to a friend. Things like, “You got this. You are doing the best you can. Everything is going to work out”.
    If you wouldn't say it to your best friend, don’t say it to yourself.

    Take tiny risks

    If comfort zones were a piece of clothing they’d almost certainly be your favourite pair of fluffy PJs, but just like you can’t stay in your pyjamas forever, you can’t sit still in life if you want to progress. We get it though, change is scary and it’s when taking these first daunting steps into unknown territory that you might experience a crisis of confidence. 
    If you’ve read the classic self help book Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers you’ll know the secret to overcoming fear is to do the very things you’re afraid of, but before you freak out, you don’t need to take a giant leap into the unknown. No, you can slowly nudge your way out of your comfort zone, and with each step your confidence will grow and grow. 
    Maybe it’s signing up to that evening class you’ve been thinking of or start chatting to that guy you like. Whatever it is, every time you do something that scares you a little, you start to develop a wonderful new belief. And that belief is ‘Yes, I can’.  

    Don’t sweat the small stuff

    Messed up? So what! We all make mistakes and as cliché as it may sound, messing up only means you were brave enough to try.
    So the next time things don’t go as planned, don’t immediately rush to berate yourself. Giving yourself a pat on the back for trying and acknowledging what you can do better next time is a sure-fire way to build the confidence to try again.

    Remember it’s all in the mind
    The mind is a complex place. Professor Steve Peters, author of The Chimp Paradox, looks at the mind in three parts: the human, the chimp, and the computer. When the chimp part of your brain perceives a threat – like the potential for embarrassment or failure, for example – it will fight, flight or freeze, and can grow paranoid and insecure. 
    Keeping your chimp – and your confidence in check – involves nurturing it with positive self talk and occasionally distracting it. Feeling panicked before a meeting with your boss or having a confidence crisis before socialising with a new group of friends? 
    Offering your chimp brain an incentive and telling it that once you’ve completed this nerve-wracking task you can relax with a reward can be an ace way to get a temporary boost of confidence and get your anxiety-ridden chimp to play ball.

    Here’s what we want you to know: Confidence is within your control and it’s got nothing to do with your job, what you are wearing or being the loudest person in the room. 
    What it really comes down to is believing, in no uncertain terms, that no matter what happens you can handle it. You are doing the best you can and you are capable of handling anything and everything that comes your way. We repeat…You got this!

    Have you ever wondered what the likes of Steve Jobs, Michelle Obama, Tony Robbins et al do to achieve the things they do? Ever find yourself asking ‘What would Oprah Do?’ or remembering you have the same number of hours in the day as Beyonce?

    First things first, it’s important to remember that you are just as capable as anybody else. You can achieve all you’ve ever dreamed of and more. Still, it can be good to find inspiration from others and discover the exact steps they take to reach the dizzying heights of success. 
    The really great news is, that 9 times out of 10, success isn’t down to chance or lucky breaks, but rituals repeated day in day out. So to satisfy our curiosity we did some digging and found out what the super successful do first thing in the morning to achieve their goals. 
    Turns out, there are a few common denominators, and who knows, you might find something you want to implement into your own morning #RitualRewire.

    They rise super early

    Not everyone wants to rise with the sun, but there’s some truth to the old adage that the early bird catches the worm. Leadership expert Robin Sharma has even written a book on how it can boost your creativity and productivity and help you achieve your goals.
    Michelle Obama, Beyonce, and Apple CEO Tim Cook all reportedly rise before 6AM. Why? Because it’s a chance to carve out time for themselves, focus on setting their mood for the day and get more done. 
    If you want to start rising early, start slow and make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep at night. Try getting up 30 minutes earlier one week, and another 30 minutes earlier the next. You could be a bonafide member of the 5AM Club before you know it. 

    They don’t hit snooze

    Love yourself a lie-in? Just like the early risers, legions of successful people say the secret to getting ahead is resisting the urge to hit snooze, and successful folk like Amazon boss Jeff Bezos and Oprah say they don’t use an alarm at all.
    Oprah explains, "I have never set an alarm, I don't believe in them. They are…alarming! I put the number in my mind, and I wake up before that, usually between 6:02 and 6:20.” 
    The great news is your can train your internal alarm clock too, but if you don’t want to ditch your alarm just yet, try putting your alarm on the other side of the room so you have to get up to switch it off. Mel Robbins ‘5 Second Rule’ can be life changing, it helps you act before your brain kicks in and finds a reason to stay in bed.

    They review their goals

    At The Head Plan we know self-reviews are so important: reviewing your goals first thing in the morning is an ideal way to set the tone for the day ahead, and it doesn’t need to take long. Using your copy of The Head Plan for five or 10 minutes in the morning to refocus on what you want to achieve and how you want to get there is enough. 
    Venus Williams explains to Fast Company that she wakes up and immediately considers how she can improve her game. “It's an addiction, but I always think about how to get better,” she says. “Everything is geared toward that.”
    Likewise, Steve Jobs had an unconventional way of ensuring he lived every day of his life in alignment with his goals. Every morning he stood in front of his mirror and asked himself a question.
    He said, "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? If the answer is no for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something."

    They meditate

    There’s nothing mediocre about meditation, just ask spiritual guru Deepak Chopra, actress Kristen Bell, famed athlete Michael Jordan, coach Tony Robbins, and the other high achievers who all make time in their mornings to get zen. Doing so helps them to increase their clarity and focus for the day ahead. 
    Meditation fan Hugh Jackman explains, "Meditation is all about the pursuit of nothingness… It's a quieting of the mind. It sharpens everything, especially your appreciation of your surroundings. It keeps life fresh."
    Meditating doesn’t need to take hours. In just 5 minutes your morning can help you feel grounded, centred and excited for the day ahead.     They drench

    Jennifer Aniston, Miranda Kerr, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Elle Macpherson all swear by the power of guzzling a glass of water first thing. In fact, Cameron Diaz downs a full litre when she wakes. She explains, "It's very important to start your day off with a lot of energy. For me, that starts with getting up, brushing my teeth, and drinking some water—I drink a litre of water straight down."
    We’re big advocates of going hard on the H2O like Diaz. After all, it’s the very reason we created our Daily Drench bottles. Want to increase your water intake first thing in the AM? 
    Here’s a pro tip: fill your bottle the night before, and put it in the fridge. You’re more likely to reach for it in the morning.

    They practice gratitude daily

    Tony Robbins is a big fan of this one. He says that practising gratitude first thing energizes him for the day ahead. Every morning he spends a few minutes thinking about three things he’s grateful for.
    Robbins explains, "The reason I picked gratitude is because when you're grateful you can't be angry. And when you're grateful you can't be fearful."
    The great thing about gratitude is that anyone can do it, and there are lots of ways to be grateful. You might like to write a list of everything you’re grateful for in your journal or give thanks for everything you touch and use as you get ready for the day ahead. By the time you’re done, you’ll be full of joy. 

    They do it consistently

    So now you know. Successful people didn’t get to where they are by luck or by chance, or because they’re better equipped than you or anybody else. Often it’s because they put consistent rituals in place that helped them to build their success step by step.
    The really great thing about that? If you already have a morning ritual, then you’re already on your way to achieving your dreams. And if you need a push in the right direction, you can rewire your own morning rituals in a way that sets you up for success. 
    Whether you want to practice gratitude like Tony Robbins, reflect on your goals like Steve Jobs, or ditch the alarm like Oprah, you too can achieve all you’ve ever dreamed of, and it all starts with a magical morning.

    You Are Not Your Thoughts

    Have you ever listened to a friend say mean things to herself? She could be complaining about the way she looks, beating herself up for not being more confident, or calling herself any number of nasty names.

    If you ever needed proof that our thoughts are just perceptions, and not truth or fact, this is it. You know your friend is an amazing person, but her thoughts are telling her otherwise. All those nasty things she’s saying to herself are the result of negative thinking. And we’ll bet there are plenty of untruths you’ve been telling yourself too. 

    You might hold certain beliefs around money, about how it’s limited and you’ll never have enough, you might feel a certain way about romance, falsely believing that you aren’t worthy of someone, and we’ll bet you have a few unfriendly thoughts about the way you look and behave too. 

    Trouble is, our thoughts can be pretty deceptive. They linger in the background of our minds 24/7 and it can be oh-so-easy to believe what they are telling us.  Over time, we can allow our thoughts to build up a picture of who we think we are and sometimes that can be fairly destructive. (It’s the voice that says you can’t have, do or be the things you desire.) 

    Eckhart Tolle sums it up. He says, “Compulsive thinking is actually an addiction… It’s addictive because you identify with thinking, which means that you derive your sense of self from the content and activity of your mind.” 

    You have the power to change

    If, like Eckhart explains, you’ve ever felt tortured by compulsive thinking, you’ll know it can impact you in all sorts of ways, from feeling constant worry to building a negative self-image that holds you back. So, let’s change that. 

    Here’s a revolutionary (but totally simple!) concept you can start believing from this day forward: you are not your thoughts. And your thoughts are not you. And anything in your psyche that tells you can’t have the life you truly desire should be questioned and scrutinized. 

    You have the power to change your thoughts, to flip them on their head, and turn them into ones that empower you and help you be the best version of you. But first things first… 

    Where do thoughts come from?

    Good question, right? And the answer isn’t simple. You might think thoughts just randomly pop into your head, but thought formation is a little more complex than that. 

    Here’s a brief explainer: most of our thoughts come from the subconscious mind, that part of our brain that works on autopilot. It’s responsible for those little voices in your head that say ‘I’m not good enough’ ‘I could never do that’ and thoughts of that ilk. 

    Here’s the truth: We aren’t even aware of most of these thoughts – they happen at an unconscious level – but every now and again one will catch our attention. When this happens we start consciously thinking about the thought, and if it’s a negative thought we might start to dwell on it and obsess over it. 

    The more we obsess over it the more it grows. Pretty soon it can develop into a strong feeling, like stress, anxiety, anger, or fear. And over time it may even influence our words and actions. Repeated often enough these thoughts can become beliefs and beliefs have a massive impact on our lives. What we believe about the world becomes our experience, and it all starts with the way we think. 

    So now you know where thoughts come from, you might be wondering… 

    What influences the way we think?

    There are any number of reasons why your thoughts might differ from somebody else’s. Sometimes it’s in the genes and has been passed down to you through generations. Sometimes it’s related to who you hang out with, and often our thoughts are influenced by our conditioning. So much of the way you think right now has to do with your past experiences and circumstances. 

    The good news is, whether you’re surrounded by positive or negative people or have experienced a lot of adversity in the past, you can choose to think differently. Those unfriendly thoughts that have been holding you back, can be changed. Here’s how… 

    Mind-management Hacks

    Become An Observer

    Looking for a way to wear yourself out? Try controlling your thoughts. Experts think we have up to 80,000 thoughts a day, and around 3,300 thoughts an hour, so it’s not only impossible to try to control your thoughts, it’s exhausting! 

    Instead, you can observe your thoughts. Become aware of what’s going on inside your head and the next time an unwanted thought appears you can view it from the standpoint of ‘Oh, isn’t that interesting’ and move on. 

    Beating yourself up every time you have a negative thought not only gives that thought energy it also allows it to grow. Instead, accept it, let it go and know this: we can guarantee even world-renowned thought leader Tony Robbins thinks unhelpful thoughts throughout the day. Negative thinking is a normal part of being human, the trick is not to identify with it. 

    Think Deliberately

    Now for the fun part: choosing your thoughts intentionally. It’s up to you to decide how you want to think. And relentless goal-getter Amanda Frances has a handy hack for noticing negative (and ultimately untrue) thoughts and turning them into something more empowering. 

    She says, when a negative thought pops into your head, like ‘I’m not worthy’ or ‘I could never have that’ ask yourself ‘Is this ultimately true?’. Next, say ‘Okay, what could be the truth?’. 

    We’ll tell you the truth: you are worthy, you are capable, and you are deserving. When an unhelpful thought pops into your head, try repeating this over and over again. 

    Practice Affirmations

    You know how passionate we are about affirmations at The Head Plan. Affirm it, believe it, achieve it, that’s our motto! Over time repeating affirmations can rewire your thoughts. And it all starts with a very simple practice: noticing your negative thoughts and creating an empowering belief that opposes them. 

    Say you’ve been telling yourself that money is always tight, you could replace that with a belief that says “Money is abundant and it’s always flowing to me.” Or if you’re plagued with self-doubt and low confidence, you could try repeating “I am confident and capable.” 

    The goal is to repeat these affirmations day in day out until they become your automatic thoughts. Saying these things out loud might feel funny at first, but eventually, those new thoughts will seep into your subconscious and become your new life-affirming, empowering beliefs.

    Tap Into Your Subconscious

    Remember that thing we said about how most of our thoughts are unconscious and many of them are whirring away in the background without our knowledge? 

    Well, it’s not just conscious thoughts that can be changed, you can rewire the unconscious ones too! Doing so requires tapping into your subconscious mind and there are lots of ways you can do that.  

    You could try daily meditation (check out our 30 Day Meditation Programme in the Meditation Folder now), or commit to thinking deliberately as soon as you wake up and right before you fall asleep when the subconscious mind is most active. The best bit? You get to choose what works best for you. 

    You are not your thoughts

    Go on. Read that line again and let it really sink in.  

    Our thoughts never stop. They are in action 24 hours a day seven days a week, and left unchecked they can drive you mad. But, you don’t need to be controlled by them. 

    Deepak Chopra puts it this way: “Thoughts are just fleeting mental images. They have no consequences until you choose to make them important.” 

    So, it’s really this simple: stop believing the bad thoughts, and begin to choose new ones that feel good. A thought that feels really good to us? “I can have everything my heart desires.” Now, that we can believe.

    What do you think of when you hear the words self-care? You might picture a hot, bubbly bath complete with candles and luxuriously scented body creams. Maybe you see your face slathered in a face mask and a fluffy robe wrapped around your body. Or picture yourself in the salon getting your nails done. Bliss.
    The great news is that self-care can be all these things and more. Taking care of yourself and making your needs a priority doesn’t just involve indulgent pamper sessions. Nope, good old self-care goes beyond the bathtub as well.
    To put it simply, self-care is any act you do with the intention of improving your mental, physical, and emotional health. It’s an activity that you consciously do to enhance your wellbeing, and honour and nurture you.
    Writing your thoughts and feelings into a journal when you’re feeling down on yourself? That’s self-care. Telling a friend you want to stay home and relax instead of going to that party? Also self-care. 
    Really, anything that involves you putting your needs first could be classed as self-care, like buying a bunch of flowers on a Sunday just because they make you smile, or allowing yourself that lie in because you know you need to rest.
    Even completing a task you’ve been putting off, like doing your taxes, spring cleaning the house, or having that awkward chat with your manager could be classed as self-care. Why? Because you’re nipping that feeling of dread in the bud and replacing it with a feeling of pride and satisfaction.

    Why is self-care important?

    It’s easy to let self-care fall by the wayside. Maybe you reckon you don’t have time to care for yourself or believe self-care is selfish. Perhaps you have great intentions but at the end of a busy workday, self-care falls waaaaaay down in the pecking order.
    Here’s the thing though: self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s essential. It’s the very thing that helps you to perform at your best, feel good about yourself, and be the amazing person that you are. 
    With a proper self-care routine, you can better manage daily stresses and strains, deepen your relationships with others, find more joy and fulfilment in your life, and have more energy for the stuff that matters.
    You know that saying about how you can’t pour from an empty cup? That sums it up. Self-care fills you up so you can pour positive energy in all directions. 
    Wonderful things happen when you make time for you.

    The Rule Of Five

    Not sure what you need or where to begin? Let us help you. Your basic self-care needs can be divided into five areas.


    This is the basic stuff; nourishment - eating your greens, movement - getting exercise, drench - drinking plenty of water, and getting enough sleep. Taking these daily self-care steps will fill you with energy for the day ahead.


    Sometimes all you really need is a good chat with a friend or a hug from someone you love. Yes, socialising is self-care too and nurturing relationships with those around you is the perfect way to make you feel connected and grounded. This includes how much alone time you need too – so don’t forget to schedule it in!


    Our thoughts and feelings determine our lives and the way you talk to yourself can be helpful or harmful to your mental health. Learning to silence your inner critic and embrace yourself with love and kindness is a form of self-care, and a list of pre-determined practices can really help on those days you really need to mind your mental health.


    How connected do you feel to your spiritual self? Nurturing this side of you is important too, and meditation, prayer, yoga, and sitting quietly in nature are the perfect ways to do this.


    How many emotions do you reckon you process in a typical day? Researchers believe there are as many as 27 different human emotions. That’s a whole lot of feelings and it’s important you nurture them. Journaling and planning activities that relax and recharge you are extremely helpful.

    How To Make It A Priority

    Divide it in 5

    When it comes to creating any new habit, we’re all about breaking things down into small manageable chunks. That’s why, when you’re creating a self-care tool-kit , it’s a good idea to look at the five basic self-care needs above and ask yourself what you need.
    Could you benefit from setting tighter boundaries around work? Would a weekly catchup call with a friend help you manage stress? Maybe it’s your spiritual self-care that’s lacking. Write it down and make it happen.

    Make a list 

    We love a good list at The Head Plan and making a list of ten things that make you feel fantastic can be truly transformative. When are you most happy? What activities make you feel relaxed, joyful, and confident, or accomplished, satisfied and calm? Have a think and commit them to paper. Hold tight, you’re about to feel AH-mazing. 

    Start with the basics

    Want to live each day with bag loads of energy and zest? We have two words for you: Drench and Nourish. As humans, our most basics needs are food and water, so take the first step by upping your water intake and filling your diet with delicious food that nourishes you.
    You don’t need to make drastic changes. Fill your Daily Drench bottle before you go to bed so you can go hard on the H20 in the morning, and consider adding an extra portion of fruit or veg to each meal. They’re small steps, but they make a whole lot of difference.

    Plan a daily self-care & wellness action

    It can be easy to put everyone else’s needs before your own, but by making self-care something you do daily, you’re putting your happiness, health, and wellbeing at the top of the to-do list. And what could be more important than that? 

    Reward it

    All of us need little incentives to help us achieve our goals, so go ahead and dangle the metaphorical carrot by giving yourself a reward every time you complete your self-care action.
    Stuck for ideas? You could book yourself in for a hair appointment after a week of prioritizing your self-care. You could put some money in a ‘treat yourself’ pot at the end of each day. Or you could put your feet up with a cup of tea.
    How you reward yourself doesn’t really matter, so long as it feels good and incentivises you to do your daily self-care & wellness actions again and again.
    Ready to prioritise your wellness? Here’s the thing about self-care. The clue is in the name. It’s something you have to do yourself. No one else is going to do it for you. 
    The wonderful news is that prioritising self-care is totally worthwhile. Not only does it feel good when you’re doing it, it can also help you get more out of life as well. With a proper self-care routine, one that nurtures you and makes you feel good, you can achieve anything.

    Before we get stuck into how personal development books have changed our lives for the better, and how they can change yours too, let’s get a handle on what the personal development genre actually is.

    Some people call it self help. Others call it self improvement. But really, it doesn’t matter what name you want to give it, personal development books are simply non-fiction texts that are packed full of powerful, transformational wisdom. They’re often jam packed with practical instruction, tried and tested steps, and inspirational real-life stories that can motivate you to make changes in your own life.

    More often than not, personal development books are written by someone who is an expert in that particular field, or someone who has been there done that and wants to share their wisdom with the world so everyone can reap the rewards together.

    Why read personal development books

    Meditation 101

    Have you ever tried to meditate, closed your eyes and cleared your mind only to suddenly remember you were supposed to call your friend/put a wash on/make a meal plan/put out a metaphorical fire at work?
    Perhaps you’ve never attempted to close your eyes and clear your mind because you feel meditation is not relevant to you, or worse because you simply don’t have the time.

    Whichever camp you fall into, mediation is a worthwhile pursuit, and once you’ve mastered it you’ll want to do it again and again, but before we get started, let’s clarify what mediation is and what it is not.

    Meditation is a practice dedicated to quieting the mind to achieve a heightened state of focus, awareness, and connection to your higher self.
    If that sounds a little too ‘woo’ to you, it can also be a way to simply grab 5 minutes of complete peace and calm in your day.

    Meditation isn’t closing your eyes and attempting to muddle through your problems, contemplate life, or reflect on events, and it isn’t linked to any particular religion either. At its core, meditation is simply the process of stilling our busy minds to reach a heightened state of calm and consciousness.

    The Magic Of Meditation

    Feel like your face is permanently pointed in the direction of your phone, or that your attention is pulled in 50 different directions at once?

    In a world constantly connected taking a breather is more important than ever, and meditation has many benefits. Is your mind awash with competing thoughts, problems and to-dos? Then meditation is the way forward. Not only will it give your mind a break from all the noise; it can also improve your clarity and focus which in turn enables you to find solutions and be more productive.

    Perhaps one of the most beautiful benefits of meditation is the powerful connection you may feel to your higher self while mediating. Put simply, your higher self is the best version of yourself. We can’t always access this part of ourselves because the constant busyness of the mind can keep it hidden, but the process of meditation allows it to emerge.

    When it does, you may notice that you feel overcome with a powerful, awe-inspiring feeling of connection and calm. Don’t be surprised if an intense but comforting feeling of euphoria washes over you while meditating.

    If all that isn’t reason enough, meditation can also lessen anxiety, regulate your mood, increase creativity, improve memory retention, boost feelings of happiness, reduce stress, deepen your sense of gratitude, improve the functioning of the brain, aid sleep, strengthen immunity, and improve your attention span.

    How To Get Started

    Step 1: 
    Get Comfy

    You might feel happier sitting upright in your favourite chair or find you’re at your comfiest when lying flat on your bed. Choose what feels best for you.
    It’s also a good idea to find the right space. Ideally, somewhere where you feel calm, collected and clutter-free

    Step 2: 
    Start Slow

    You don’t need to spend a full 60 minutes a day meditating to feel its benefits. It’s best to start slow and build it up as you go along. Aim for just 5 minutes in the beginning and over time you can increase that to whatever feels right to you. It all starts by closing your eyes that very first time and committing to make it a consistent habit.  

    Step 3: 
    And Breeeeeathe

    This next step is so simple, it hardly even warrants instruction. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Notice your chest rising and falling, and the air flowing in and out of your nose with ease. Just keep your focus on this and nothing else and you’ll slowly slip into a meditative state.  

    Step 4: 
    Let The Thoughts Pass

    Want to know one of the biggest stumbling blocks when it comes to meditation? It’s getting frustrated when thoughts emerge. Sure, you are meant to clear your mind when you meditate, but during the process of meditation, thoughts will naturally pop into your mind.

    The trick is to simply observe them and let them pass. Getting annoyed or disheartened that a thought has distracted you lessens your connection and impedes your success. Occasional thoughts are normal. Just let them float on by.  

    Step 5: 
    And You’re Back In The Room

    Once your time is up, slowly begin to notice the sensations in your body again – some people like to wiggle their fingers and toes as they come back into full consciousness. Open your eyes, take a moment to fully awaken, and slowly ease yourself into your day.  

    Step 6: 
    Choose Your Style

    Get crystal clear

    Before you set goals, it’s pretty essential that you sit down and suss out what it is you actually want. Take your time on this one. Now is your opportunity to get crystal clear on what you want in life so don’t rush the process.
    Look at the six main areas of your life – finance, business & career, self-care & wellness, friends & family, personal development & learning, and physical environment – write out exactly how you want your life to look. Jot down whatever it is that comes to mind and don’t be worried if your list of goals currently resembles a mass of messy scribbles – you can finesse it in the next step.
    If you’ve set small goals in the past because you didn’t believe the bigger stuff was attainable, now is the time to really dream big. Try not to worry about how it might happen; pull out the big guns of belief and trust it will. You got this!

    Grab your journal and read over them first thing in the morning, write them out and stick them on the fridge, create a vision board or a screensaver on your phone. Do whatever you have to do to keep your goals at the forefront of your mind.
    If after a little while you realise that a goal you set isn’t really aligned with what you want, for whatever reason? That’s okay. Revise it and replace it with something that feels much more ‘you’.

    Powerful practices

    Want to level up your goal setting practice? Try practice gratitude for your goals now, as if they were already achieved. If you’re a fan of the Law Of Attraction, you’ll know that doing so will help you attract all those magical things into your life.
    Next, close your eyes, and visualize it. Can you imagine being the CEO of your own company or opening the door to your brand new home? Good, because if you can see it, you’re going to be it.

    Don’t give up

    What do you think the majority of people do when things are not going in the way they want? Most of us, if we’re being totally honest, take it as a sign we should give up. A bump in the road isn’t a sign you should throw in the towel…it is an opportunity to really test your commitment. How badly do you want it? Now is the time to really go for it.
    Knock-backs are all part of the process and without them, you wouldn’t be able to level up and become the version of yourself who’s living the dream. If you need it, take a little time to wallow, regroup, and just keep going. Trust us, it will be worth it. What is for you will not pass you.

    Reward yourself

    Everyone needs incentives. When it comes to your goals, what are yours?
    Having little things to look forward to, like a special purchase at the end of a busy week, a cup of tea and a square of chocolate for completing a nerve-wracking task, or your favourite dinner for finally opening that savings account, can keep you going while you wait for the big rewards, so schedule them in. Don’t just plan your daily tasks but your daily rewards too!

    By starting each morning with a ritual, you’re setting an intention for the day ahead, and ensuring that you rule the day, instead of the other way around.
    At first glance, having a ritual you repeat day in day out, may seem tedious, but once you’ve experienced the life-changing benefits, you’ll want to do it again and again, and you might even find that without your morning ritual you feel in a bit of a funk.

    Get this: the way you start your morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. By starting the day in a relaxed, fulfilling, and positive way, you’re more likely to carry those feelings into the afternoon, and feel more equipped to handle any challenges that come your way.
    A morning ritual can also help you to laser focus on your goals and give your day a clear purpose and intention. Starting your day with a ritual can help you to prioritize and problem solve which in turn makes it easier for you to complete tasks and inch closer to your goals.
    That’s not all. An effective morning ritual can be incredibly grounding. Having a set morning routine that you complete every day without fail can help you feel in control and can lessen anxiety as a result. Add to that, you’ll go through your day with a sense of achievement, clarity and control.

    How To Get Started

    Step 1
    To change anything for the better, you first need to look at what’s not working, so before you excitedly grab a pen and start plotting, write out what your current morning routine looks like.
    Do you wake up late and spend the first 30 minutes of your day rushing around in a blur? Do you open your eyes and anxiously run through all the tasks you have to complete that day? Perhaps you spend the first 10 minutes scrolling through Insta.
    Step 2
    Now it’s time for the fun part: creating a new plan. One that will set you up for the best day, every day. Close your eyes, and imagine your perfect morning. What are you doing? How do you feel? And most importantly, how do you want to continue to feel throughout the day?
    Step 3
    Write it out, and suss out how much time you’ll need in the morning to complete each activity. You don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn if you aren’t an early riser. A morning ritual can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as an hour. However long it takes you to feel grounded and excited for the day ahead. And that’s it, set your alarm for the morning and get ready to rise. 

    Stuck for ideas?

    Here’s the good news. There’s no hard and fast rule for what your new morning ritual should entail. If you’ve identified that your day is often filled with negative thoughts and complaints, you might like to kickstart your morning by jotting down 3 things you’re grateful for in your journal.
    Maybe you’ve identified that your day needs more structure. That’s a great excuse to open up your copy of The Head Plan and list out your goals, intentions, and tasks.
    Next, you could recite some affirmations to set positive intentions for the day. If anxiety is a problem, 5 minutes of meditation might help you feel calm, while a quick review of your goals is sure to give you a lasting jolt of motivation.

Create a mini ritual for the days all you really want to do is to catch some more zeds.
    The simplest way to do that is to identify the most effective action in your current ritual. Which activity could you not live without? Which one gives you the biggest rush of high vibes? Commit to that one action on your lazy days and you’ll still see your life change.
